Hands-Only CPR Training
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is the leading cause of death in the United States to date. During SCA, the patient's heart is not beating and they are not breathing on their own. Once first response arrives on scene, CPR is provided to give the patient another chance at life. The national response time for first responders is under 4 minutes. While this may seem relatively quick, a person's brain begins to die after 4-6 minutes after the time of SCA due to lack of oxygen. Here at Pickens Fire Department, we like to educate the public about the seriousness of pre-arrival CPR. This means bystanders performing CPR until EMS, Police, or the Fire Department can arrive on scene and take over. By performing CPR prior to first responders' arrival, the patient has a significantly greater chance of surviving. We understand that performing CPR can be very scary and uncomfortable. It's because of this understanding that Pickens Fire Department has purchased 90 manikins for training and educating the public about CPR. We provide this service for free and encourage any and all people to contact the Pickens Fire Department about taking this 20 minute training.
